How to use this map

Finding what you're looking for

  • Month: choose which month to view, or "All months".
  • Offence: show one type of offence only, such as violence or drugs. The number next to each shows how many incidents it covers.
  • Town or area: type a town and the map zooms in to it.
  • Status buttons: click a coloured button to hide or show that type of case. Click it again to bring it back.
  • Heat map and Pins: use the boxes in the top right corner of the map to switch either on or off.

Moving around the map

  • Use the + and − buttons, or pinch on a phone, to zoom in and out.
  • To zoom with your mouse wheel, click once on the map first.
  • Drag the map to move around.

Pins and circles

  • Numbered circles group incidents that are close together. Click one to zoom in.
  • Where several incidents are in the same town, the circle fans out into separate pins when you click it.
  • On a computer, hover over a pin for a quick preview.
  • Click or tap a pin for the full details and a link to the original source.

What the colours mean

  • Convicted: found guilty or sentenced in court.
  • Charged or on trial: charged by police or currently on trial. Not convicted.
  • Wanted by police: a police appeal to find someone.
  • Missing person appeal: a police appeal to find someone who is missing.
  • Incident, not in court: a reported incident with no one in court yet.

On the heat map, pale yellow shows fewer incidents and deep red shows the most.

What's included

  • Incidents and crimes across the UK, gathered each month from published police, court and news reports.
  • Pins are placed in the middle of the town or area, not where the incident happened, and you can only zoom in as far as town level. Where only the county or wider area is known, the pin sits at a central point in that area.
  • People are named only once they have been convicted, or where the police have published a wanted appeal. Anyone charged or on trial is not named.
  • Victims and missing people are not named on the map. Where details have been made public, you can find them in the original source.
  • The map is updated every month.
  • If you spot something in your area that isn't on the map, send it through to crime@w4restore.co.uk with a link to the news report or police appeal, and I'll add it.

About this map. Pins are placed in the middle of the town or area, not where the incident happened, and some areas cover more than one incident. Hover over a pin for a quick preview and click it for the full details and the original source.

Everything here comes from published police, court and news reports. Anyone arrested, charged or on trial is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty, and only the facts released are shown. People are named only once they have been convicted, or where the police have published a wanted appeal. Victims and missing people are not named on the map; any published details can be found in the original source. Incidents without a confirmed location are not shown on the map.

Missing something? If you spot something in your area that isn't on the map, send it through to crime@w4restore.co.uk with a link to the news report or police appeal, and I'll add it.

Spotted something wrong or out of date? let me know and I'll correct it.
